Nothing can really prepare you for the first time at Celsa. As Castello di Celsa wedding photographers, we’ve tried to capture it many times — no photos will ever do it justice, although we always try.. We have had multiple friends in town visit it to see its beauty, though seeing it during a wedding just makes it even more special. As a Castello di Celsa wedding photographer, we’ve gotten to experience it in a way many people don’t get to.
You drive through the metal gates off the main road – and the castle doesn’t show itself immediately. There’s a dirt road, well maintained, cutting through the holm oak woods. And then slowly — you catch a first glimpse. And all of a sudden it’s there: The rose-colored stones, the vines on the walls that turn red as autumn arrives. The tiny imperfections in the stonework, making every wall feel perfectly misaligned. From the round chapel to every single detail that time worked its magic on, we have no hesitation in saying—after nearly fifteen years of wedding photography—that this is one of the most beautiful venues we’ve ever been to.
The light here shines differently. Perched on its hill west of Siena, with views stretching to Monte Amiata, Celsa catches the Tuscan sun. It was designed that way deliberately — Baldassarre Peruzzi, the architect who transformed it from a medieval fortress into a Renaissance villa in the 16th century, was asked specifically to free the house and allow it to be bathed with the sun and with light. You feel that intention everywhere, but especially in the late afternoon, when everything goes warm and golden and the stone shines in a way only film can really hold.
And inside Castello di Celsa, it doesn’t ease up.

You make your way through the courtyard and it feels like a real castle, with rooms housing armor, ancient weapons, and tapestries. Eventually, you reach a corridor—the length of this frescoed gem is perfect for quiet, editorial portraits before the ceremony. Then there’s the room with the piano, and around that, the room most couples don’t discover: a small, ornate, private space with a window facing the ceremony garden. It has some of the best light in the building, and we think it’s the perfect place for a few moments of makeup or for a quiet reflection before everything begins.
When choosing where to host your Castello di Celsa wedding ceremony, the options feel endless, though none are more iconic than the formal gardens. They are truly some of the most beautiful castle gardens in all of Tuscany. There’s a natural sequence to the arrival—guests pass through stone walls into the garden, creating a moment of suspense before the couple appears. Whether you choose the altar near the water pond with the castle as your backdrop, or the intimate, quietly extraordinary Renaissance chapel for a Catholic ceremony, the architecture does the heavy lifting for the photos.

Aperitivo has a few different setup options, though outside near the castle is our favorite, giving guests time to explore. Meanwhile, the side garden—with its long stretch of manicured greenery—is the perfect place to get away for a bit while we take your wedding party and couple portraits. There is so much more to explore beyond the formal gardens: the woods, the walls, and the quiet corners that most guests never find.
Celsa works for elopements and for large weddings equally well. The Granary, with its trussed roof and loggia overlooking the Sienese countryside, is where dinner typically happens. It has that same quality as the finest Tuscan venues, where guests walk in and immediately reach for their phones.
We photographed our first elopement here with Natalia and Marcos—just the two of them, a garden ceremony, and a candlelit dinner with an incredible view of the castle. Read the full story here. We’ve been back since, and we’re looking forward to May when we return once again; we can’t wait to see what the castle does with a large celebration.
